Robin's Nest

We've got a nest in the laurel bush at the edge of our porch! There are 3 eggs, and one baby bird so far. Lydia is already keeping a journal about the nest at Leslie's house, so we've added the information about our nest too. Both nests are in perfect viewing spots-- Leslie's is in a hanging basket of flowers on the porch, and ours is at Lydia's eye level on our porch. Silly robins!

Did you know that the robin parents take turns watching the nest? The mother sits on the nest overnight, and in the morning, the father flies by to relieve her. Last night when we were sitting on the porch, a robin buzzed the shrub and another robin flew out of the foliage. I immediately looked for a nest, and there it was!

Happy Customer

I just got a new serger, and my grandmother asked me to replicate her favorite t-shirt. I folded the shirt and laid it on the fabric, pinning the fabric along every seam. I cut it out with a rough 1/4 inch seam (that quilting experience sure has trained my eye!) and serged it together. Success! She likes it! Next up, clothes for MEEEEE.

When I say Madam, you say President!
Two weeks ago I was in the field house at our local university to see Barack Obama and Chris Matthews tape an episode of Hardball. This morning at 8:30 I was at the local fire house waiting to see Hillary Clinton. By 2:00, I was at a train station 7 miles away waiting to see Barack Obama for a second time. By 4:30, I was home, with a new Hillary Clinton for President sign planted on my lawn, and a clear conscience that this year I have done my research.

Hillary Clinton has my vote because she described concretely the issues that face our nation. Her speech was detailed and focused, practical and encouraging. She addressed the following issues directly: the budget deficit; the war in Iraq; health care and social security; energy independence; job market expansion. Hillary plans to restore balance for American citizens-- balance among the tax burdens citizens and businesses of all income levels bear; balance between a reduction in our energy requirements and the identification and diversification of renewable energy sources; balance between the cost of health care and the number of people who receive timely, affordable, reliable medical services; balance between the number of manufacturing jobs we have lost and the number of new skilled workers needed in the service sector.

I believe Hillary Clinton knows the issues this country faces, and she will rally the citizens of this country to chip away at these problems together. She inspired me and gave me confidence that the problems are big, but not insurmountable. I believe her long service record, as First Lady of Arkansas, as First Lady of the United States, and as US Senator from New York, shows that she is committed to public service above all. She has withstood the intense pressures of campaigning for her husband and for herself, year after year. She has kept her energy, her dignity, and her focus even under the intense scrutiny of the world. Becoming Commander-in-Chief will not shake her resolve to bring back balance to our government.

I have had the fantastic opportunity to see both candidates in person in one day. My vote will be for Hillary Clinton. When I say Madam, you say President!

Thrifting
I've been haunting the thrift stores lately, finding things to help with the redecoration of my sewing room. My best find to date happened this weekend, when I found this red wicker laundry hamper. I took off the red vinyl and padding and recovered the top with a cheery strawberry print. This is a great ironing station for the sewing room, and holds a LOT of bagged yarn. Perfect.

Craft Room Cleanout on eBay
I think I have a post twice a year about cleaning out my sewing room. It's a process, what can I say? I'm selling some Japanese craft/quilt books and other stuff on eBay this week. Hoping to save a little cash towards a new sewing machine? We'll see. This weekend John put up a full-sized design wall and pegboard for me. I'm putting it to immediate use designing a challenge quilt for the guild. I was given a brown bag with light pastels (yellow and light purple)-- I instantly thought of Kaffe's Herringbone quilt from the Glorious Patchwork book, and now I'm having fun turning the uglies into something I quite like. I think I might even hand quilt it! Wheee!

I finished the brick bracket quilt-- right down to the binding. It's kind of short for the sofa, but I love using it. Onward and upward!
