And to all a Good Night!
I present, by popular demand (thank you, Sally), my first completed adult-size sweater.

Milestone!

Peace and joy to all this Christmas season.

On your marks....
I've knit a plain stockinette swatch and this one, for Seahorse, and two baby bootees out of Rowan denim. They're all in the wash now. My pre-wash gauge for the stockinette swatch was 20.75 stitches and 28.8 rows over 4 inches using US size 6 Addi Turbos. I'll see what happens in the wash, and if I don't like it I might try going down to a size 5 up to a size 7 needle to get closer to the desired 20/28, or maybe using a 7 to knit and a 6 to purl.

My elann den-m-nit arrived today (Sunday) so now I'll have to knit up those swatches too. I can't wait! Unfortunately I was awake from 12:30 - 5:30 am last night so today I'm too tired to do much of anything. And tomorrow is Monday. I think I need a vacation.

Lydia had a rough day too. Who says the holidays are all fun and games?

ahhh.... happy
blue hands

Fanning the Flames
Kay, Queen of Denim, very kindly answered all my questions and more yesterday and today she is fanning the flames of desire with this post chock full of photos of denim knit in different textured patterns. Not just denim, different colors of denim, and even the very Kaffe-like holding two thinner strands of subtly shaded denim together!

I'm weak.

Following Kay's tips, I have placed my order for lots and lots of denim. Enough to knit the largest sweater in the largest size. I ordered the darkest blue so I could watch the full range of fade happen, wash after wash. If there are leftovers (and I do so hope there are) I'll be knitting baby things-- as gifts. I just called my local Rowan stockist (yes, I have one!) and she is holding the book for me. I waited so patiently through yesterday (she is closed on Monday) and now just to get the baby napped and fed, and it's mine all MINE!

Meanwhile, I've been knitting one of those little denim booties from Zoe Mellor's book. It's keeping me sane. For just a few more hours.....

Knitter's High
I'm all jittery. I finished a project! I have many projects started already, but I FINISHED one. I'm completely justified in buying new yarn, and new book, new needles-- whatever I need!

I'll die if I don't get this book in the next 24 hours.

And all 39,000 balls of expensive imported British yarn to go with it. And I need to email Kay, queen of denim, to find out: what's the point of ecru denim? It looks pretty, but it doesn't fade! Should it be used anyway? I must know.

Okay, off to fill many virtual shopping carts with patterns and yarn. I will keep the browser windows open for days, my finger hovering over the submit now button, while I compare shipping costs, mentally knit miles of cables, and sweat off this high.

Maybe it's a good thing I don't finish many things!

DONE done
000_0393.JPGHow long did it take me to knit this sweater? About 6 months from the purchase of the pattern to sewing in the tag... but really, it took me my whole life until now to knit this sweater. I've been knitting since I was a kid, and knitting quite a lot for the last 8 or 10 years. But this is the very first adult sweater I have completed. Wow. That's a lot of baby garments, mittens, hats, scarves, and socks! Today, I am a real knitter.

P.S. Model shots after SnB on Dec. 20th. I don't want to hear "oh yeah, I saw that on your blog..." This is BIG, people!

Now, what shall I knit next?

Deadline Knitting
Despite my vow not to succumb to peer pressure and try to finish every knitting/quilting UFO I've got BEFORE Christmas, I couldn't resist trying to finish my Sarah James Naturelle pullover before Stitch n Bitch on the 20th. If I do, it will be my first sweater FOR ME! And I will have done the whole thing-- pattern selection, yarn selection, swatching, and knitting, in less than one calendar year. Plus, I asked my grandmother to buy me a coordinating shirt for Christmas. These are big incentives!

As of two days ago, the sweater needed one sleeve and a neckband, plus seams. I went into production knitting mode. I stayed up until 2 am last night finishing the neckband, soaking the new bits in Eucalan, and threading blocking wires down the sleeves. Right now, the sweater is drying on the blocking board. Oh hurry, hurry! I'm actually looking forward to seaming it!

I have a little bit of worry that the sleeves are too short, so I stre-e-e-etched them during blocking. (I had to fold the body in thirds to fit everything on my board!) And the neckband made the back ever so slightly puckery, but again, I hope that blocking just takes care of it.

Oooooo! I'm so excited.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
The house is decorated

(MUCH earlier than usual)

I finished Lydia's stocking-- it took a whole year longer than I thought it would!

And now I'm working on using up some scraps.

I love red, so there's a WHOLE lot of it. Some of these scraps won't use up, though, they just get a little smaller.
