Time is Running OUT!
Lydia's Drive-By Baby Book

  • Lydia has 6 teeth, which all came in at once when she turned 9 months old.
  • At her 9-month check-up, the doctor gave Lydia an A+, and I felt like I had gotten the best report card of my life.
  • Lydia started crawling!-- on December 10th, at her great-grandmother's, while we were celebrating Mommy-Gam's 81st birthday.
  • Lydia pulls herself up on any available surface, grabs hold of your fingers and walks laps around the house. She started immediately after she started crawling. She's got places to go!
  • Lydia got her first cold-- for Christmas. Sorry, baby.
  • She also babbles really cute noises and stands up in her crib. Awww. What a cute baby!
Blog Topics for a Rainy Day
  • When I was a kid, we always took our favorite present along to the family party on Christmas Day. It's been many years since I got presents worthy of carting around all day, but this year I got TWO!
  • Art can still be art, even if it is hard or you seem to have to work at it. Why do people think that art is a talent that great artists just have, and that they don't have to work or develop it?
  • I hate consumerism. I am a consumer. S*@!
  • When I am old, I would like to be the old lady who wears a dress everyday with pantyhose, sensible shoes, and an overcoat of appropriate length. Even now, I confess I am tempted to find a dress pattern, sew myself several dresses in different hues, and throw out all my other clothes. I am trying to content myself with handwashing my woolens and setting up a household routine that means I am never without several meals in the pantry. This does not mean I am not a feminist.
  • I really want to write a book showcasing my expertise one day (first, I would like to have a recognized expertise). I would also like to teach quilting. When I start a new project, I always mentally note the things I would point out to my students. I think owning a fabric store would be great, but really I just want to build a community of artists who share my interests. Fear is pretty much the only thing holding me back from these endeavors. [However, I did get a knitting group going this year! Maybe 2005 is the year of the quilt.]
I needed to clear these ideas from my head to make space for model year 2005. I foresee a year very similar to this one, and full of opportunity. Wishing you all a very happy new year!

Moving again!
...But not houses this time. Thank God. John is migrating all of his sites to a new server, and my blog along with them. There may be some hinkiness over the next few days, and it's possible your bookmark may not work when all's said and done. (Not that there's anything going on here lately anyway...) The new address will be www.katesblog.com. See you there in a few days!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Finally Moved In
This weekend we rented a dumpster and hauled the old kitchen cabinets out of the basement and into the trash. John also hauled the "compost pile" which contained tree limbs, tupperware pitchers and margarine tubs, into the trash. A small pile of actual compost is all that remains to remind us of the hideous brush pile that uglified the yard. What did we do to fill the new void in our basement? Why, we emptied our storage unit, of course! Now we have stacks of half-packed boxes, mismatched chairs, and pictures that won't look nice on our new walls all around the perimeters of our rooms. But at least we don't have a storage unit anymore! This means we have finally finished moving in. There will now be a celebration period that lasts until mid-January, and then we will commence the settling in phase. Settling in means we will winnow the picture collection and perhaps hang a few, send out the chairs for upholstery and eventually start making this house our own. I can't wait. I love the unfamiliar optimism that has finally reentered our lives.

Knitting is slow. I broke my US size 4 wooden needle a few weeks ago, so I've never gotten my Sampler Cardigan off the ground. I'm busy trying to make Christmas stockings for each of us (quilted) and to document the process for submission to a magazine. I'd like to be published once, to keep up with John, who doesn't consider it a good year unless he's made it into the national print media. This year was stellar for him, since he and the Retropod made it into Newsweek (the international edition), a zine from the Netherlands called Pulp, and ReadyMade. The capper was the cease and desist letter from Sony, which I ought to frame as a Christmas present. Anyway, I have some catching up to do. So far Lydia and I have managed to pull out lots of fabric and pile it all over the floor of the sewing room. She may be the only one who understands the classification system used in making the piles.

Lydia is learning new, adorable tricks each day. She claps, she waves hello/goodbye, and she's crawling! She looks like a wind-up toy as she wiggles her diapered bottom across the floor. I keep thinking she's the cutest baby on the planet, and then she goes and learns something even cuter. We have documented the cuteness thoroughly, by photographing her on Santa's lap and at Sears photo studio. Maybe you'll be getting your very own photo in the mail soon!

The local stitch-n-bitchers are coming over next week for some holiday cheer. I can't wait to have some friends in to warm the house. I'm looking forward to a very festive Christmas, and in case I don't return to blogging for a few weeks, I'll wish you all a Happy New Year, too!
