Kate's Perspective

I plan to add a side-bar to my blog in the next week or so. I'm going to post pictures of my works-in-progress. Off the top of my head, that list includes a blue-and-white star quilt that I began in 1998, a quiviut scarf that also dates to '98, and an aran-knit baby sweater begun on my honeymoon (for a friend!). Plus I have miles of fabric and yarn in storage that I am dying to put to use. I would like to reduce the amount of guest room devoted to fabric storage and increase the amount of guest room devoted to guest storage. Right now, a guest would be hard put to find a place to kick off his or her shoes, let alone lower the murphy bed.

Stay tuned, but don't hold your breath. This update is a lower priority than replacing the kitchen faucet, but higher than unpacking the last wedding presents, purchasing a bureau to store linens and above-mentioned fabric, and planting spring bulbs.

VHP 2003
John and I are trying to organize our respective siblings and a few close friends for a week in Vieques early in the new year. John is an ambitious and successful people-organizer (natural talent honed by years of camp-counseling and youth-ministering). When I first met him, he invited me on a weekend camping trip that included friends from work and high school. While John set up and tended a full bar and Alejandro Rubio cooked salmon and asparagus in the coals, a whole team was busy pitching the Sir Edmund Hilary nylon three-room lodge cabin in which we slept. A major highlight of the trip was a pair of walkie talkies that the caravan of cars used to communicate on the highway.

I, on the other hand, am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the thought of notifying everyone of our proposed trip dates, confirming sleeping arrangements for as many as 11 potential guests (plus us!), and maintaining an atmosphere of footloose, fancy-free hilarity all the while. But having been a guest of John's in the past, I know it will be worth the effort. In order of distance, we have the following guest list:

  • 3 West Chesterians
  • 4 New Yorkers
  • 1 Milwaukee-ite + guest?
  • 1 Albequerquean + guest?
  • 2 Olympic Peninsulans

I propose a Jan 1, 2003, departure with a Jan 9, 2003 return. Can I get someone to second the motion? In the meantime, I'll ask John for some pictures of the beach and maybe even some of the guests.

I haven't been a lazy blogger... I've been busy doing research! I've been shamelessly reading the blogs of people whom I've never met. I've even been keeping score!

I've learned a lot-- apparently there are zillions of 20-something knitters in urban areas who meet at weekly Stitch n Bitch sessions. Also SAHM means Stay At Home Mom. Who knew that all these people were out there living life and writing it down? I would like to start a Stitch n Bitch in West Chester. I'm embarrassed to say that in public, because I worry that I am a big loser and that no one else my age is interested in this old lady junk... but from all the blogs I've seen, there are plenty of people my age interested in this old lady junk, and some of them even have cool blogs!

    Interesting things found through Blog-surfing
  • Knitty.com: The ultimate hip, 20-something knitter mag. Their tag line is "little purls of wisdom."
  • not martha I want to make marble magnets too!
  • International Knitting Meetup Day If I weren't a scaredy-cat, this is probably exactly how I could meet knitters. However, I have a healthy, verging on weird, fear of joining groups of strangers.
  • One Hundred Words: A first-person account of September 11, 2001 by Marney Andersen. I found Marney's entry through her knitting blog and was blown away by her story, told in 100-word segments over 28 days.
  • The Domestic Sphere SAHM (perhaps?) with lots of knitting ideas and a digital camera.

So that's it-- another near-blog entry. By the way, I have also been a serial-viewer of blogs by Will Ronco, Genevieve Futrelle, and Alejandro Rubio. I was inspired to write today because I didn't find new entries on two out of three, and I figured it was my turn to contribute a little diversion.

Boy, marriage really changes people! Barely a month after the wedding cake was served, my new husband has found a new passion for life...in the teachings of Tony Robbins! I'm not sure I can be held responsible for this, since half of every work week he is living in Washington, DC. I will do what I can to return his dilated, spiraling pupils to normal, but it's pretty hard to compete when Tony has told John they are kindred spirits. Wish me luck!
